Hierarchy of Elements
The first thing that attracts my attention is the white title against the large field of pure vivid red. Then, I notice the woman walking through the white text. She takes the center of the poster. Her upper body is in line with her left leg. The steady posture holds up the image like a pillar and drives people’s sight to the name of the director above her head. The shoes hanging on a tree take the upper-right corner behind the woman and the tree hanging over the woman’s head extends the line from the body to the director’s name.
Grid System
Lines along the edge of the text divide the image into 9 grids. Most of the design elements are in the central grid, which creates a concise style and outlines the information. The figure’s head and feet stretch out of the central grid evenly, which enhances dynamism and avoids the picture to be rigid. The tree in shadow above the figure in shadow help to create cohesion. And the shoes left behind the woman reflect the theme of gain and lose.
Negative Space
All the text are white and all the images are dark. The two group of elements in contrast colors form two triangles pointing upward.
Color
The Sun Also Rises is a story happens in the a time when modern and feudal thoughts collided in China. Black and white in high contrast imply this confliction. And the in-shadow woman walking into the white text towards the light and left the shoe, a symbol of the old times, behind also reveals the theme. Red color is a classic visual symbol of China. It indicates the background of the story and at the same time, its brightness communicates the fierce struggle and sacrifice in the battle of concepts.
