Water        Wind

This Cornell box shows how human behavior affects the environment and wild animals. The viewer can pump water out from the box. Ocean animation projected on the box shows the water level. When the viewer pumps out too much water, sandstorms sweep the ocean and lift the sea turtle to the air.

Design

The projection surface was shaped like a submarine window to create a narrative scenario in which the viewer faces a dilemma of protecting the ocean or keeping oneself alive. The enclosed capsule highlights the urgency and necessity of obtaining water from outside, however, when the viewer pumps water from the other side of the window, he or she directly sees the disaster occurring just outside the window and also poses a threat to life.

Review

The process of water level dropping happens too fast. The viewer gets too little time to understand what is going on. A great suggestion is combining the idea with a water dispenser. When one gets a cup of water, a turtle projected on the screen has less water to live on, so the viewers have to decide to save the turtle or to save themselves. Also, a water dispenser makes the water dropping process much slower and projects the delimma in everyday activity.
