Stop Motion

A Pinterest GIF in which a zipper breaks and brings together two lovers inspired us to explore the scene transitions in cut-out animation. In our work, a zipper tears the beautiful surface of the sea. As the lens closes up, fishes swim in groups. Then, the camera zooms out. You see a pipe appears. It lets out pollutants and traps the fish. As the fish struggle against the plastic bag, the zipper slowly closed and the image goes back to the very beginning.
The scene transition endows the narrative with richer layers. Curiosity about the fate of the fish may drive spectators to reflect on what we have done to the environment.
This sequence was inspired by the pixilation animation Animating Myself! (Kevin Parry). In that work, a hand manipulates a person on a swivel chair like a puppet. This might be the magic of stop motion. Every single frame was made with items in the real world. However, with the delicate operation, the sequence presents an image beyond imagination.
